Change the disc brake from the material structure to achieve real lightweight
Jul 28, 2022
The concept of light weight has spread in recent years and has become a point of concern for people and a selling point of business promotion, and the light weight of automobile brake discs has become a hot topic recently.
It is understood that major brake companies brought their latest products at the Frankfurt exhibition, innovating in terms of material and structure to meet the current trend of lightweight and long life. Under the current high-efficiency logistics transportation conditions, asbestos materials or steel semi-fibers are very easy to carbonize, which affects driving safety and vehicle attendance.
Carbon fiber stands out for its high strength and low density, ultra-high temperature resistance in non-oxidizing environment, good fatigue resistance and light weight. This composite material provides low density and light weight brake pads; it also provides a smooth braking curve, while accepting more friction shocks and less wear, which also increases service life.
After technical research, some manufacturers have developed carbon fiber brake pads. Scientifically speaking, this brake pad material is not entirely made of carbon fiber, but a composite material that incorporates some metal materials.
After talking about the brake pads, let's take a look at the brake disc. The reason for replacing the disc of a disc brake is more of a crack than reaching the wear limit. In order to improve the strength of the brake disc, the strength of the brake disc is studied from the viewpoint of material and structure.
In terms of materials, cast iron is now the main material, but it is developing in the direction of forged steel. The strength of special forged steel brake discs is twice that of cast iron brake discs. However, other new materials such as ceramic materials cannot be promoted because of high cost.
Ceramic material has not been used even in European and American commercial vehicles, but it is proposed to make a design in structural design. Among them, bimetallic materials have been promoted. The so-called bimetal means that the brake disc is still made of cast iron, but the inner ring is made of high-strength steel to meet the needs of lightweight.
